Introduction class Playing with your voice

Content
This introduction class is a workshop for singers. Our intention is to get people interested in singing and the development of their voice in combination with acting, an insight into the work method of the vocal coach Scott Blick, and this, as a prelude to his unique singing course that has already been given for several years at the LAK, and will be offered again next years.

One of the fundamental premises of Scott's approach to singing and the voice is the idea that there are more similarities between the three disciplines of singing, acting and dancing than one may first think. Central to his approach is the role of the singer as 'story teller'; ie. someone who tells their 'story' using words, notes and rhythms. By working on text as an actor, you will become aware of what effect the text of a song combined with an ímpulse' can have on you emotionally, physically and of course, voaclly. Scott's work encourages singers to look beyond the words and notes of a song at their dramatic relationship, and offers ways how they can tell their stories 'honestly'.

Scott also offers a way of thinking about vocal technical problems such as intonation, the breath and the transition between high and low singing that will enable you to work with and ultimately resolve them.

The workshop lasts 3 1/2 hours and is divided into four shorter sessions with short breaks inbetween.

* The first session is a 'warming up' - physical as well as vocal. Using games and exercises participants will work on their concentration, and develop their 'looking and listening' skills.
* In the second session participants will explore the potential of their bodies to convey a character type or communicate a story or situation. We will also look at the influence an 'impulse' can have on you vocally and physically.
* In the third session we go further working on the text of the song each participants wants to perform in the last part of the workshop.
* In the fourth session a pianist will attend and we will endeavour to put the work of the earlier sessions into practice whilst singing.
